TUALATIN — Runners from Astoria and Seaside braved the smokey air of the Willamette Valley to take part in the 13th annual Tualatin Invitational, Sept. 10 at Tualatin High School.

Competing against a field of runners from mostly 5A and 6A schools, the athletes from Clatsop County managed to find some success in the 5,000-meter varsity races.

The Seaside boys did not field a complete team, but Gulls’ senior Rafi Sibony ran the course in 17 minutes, 15 seconds for seventh place individually. Jerik Embleton of Marist took first in 15:51.

The Astoria girls placed seventh out of 10 teams, in a field of mostly 5A and 6A schools.

TILLAMOOK — Cross country runners from Astoria and Seaside trudged through the mud and the heat at Tillamook, in the “Ultimook Race Nike Invitational,” held Sept. 2 at Hydrangea Ranch.

The Astoria girls placed third out of 14 schools (1A-4A) in the 5,000-meter varsity race team standings, behind Tillamook and Washougal.

Freshman Sophie Long highlighted Astoria’s effort, finishing 13th out of 127 runners, running the course in 23 minutes, 54.04 seconds. Senior teammate McKenzie Burnett was 15th (24:11.75), and Scappoose senior Linnaea Kavulich was in the individual winner (20:30.35).

On the boys’ side, Astoria and Seaside did not field complete teams in the 5,000, but the Gulls’ Rafi Sibony placed 15th (19:15.14) out of 173 runners in the varsity race.

COEUR D’ELENE, Idaho — Ginny Soller Meadway — the Seaside High graduate and triathlete featured in the previous issue of the Seaside Signal — had another successful weekend of competition in the Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Aug. 27 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Meadway, 34, finished second out of 71 competitors in the age 35-39 division, and placed sixth out of 304 females entered in the race.

Overall, she was 59th out of 980 competitors. Her official time was 10 hours, 54 minutes, 30 seconds (8:40 per mile).
