SEASIDE — Cottage Grove was within four points of Seaside midway through the second quarter, but a 17-0 run by the Lady Gulls led to a 50-30 win for Seaside Friday night, on Day 2 of the Holiday Classic.
The Lions put up a tough challenge in the first half, rallying from a 19-10 deficit to within 19-15, before the Gulls closed out the second quarter on a 6-0 run, highlighted by two baskets from Sydney Villegas and a score by Maddi Utti as time expired.
Seaside put the game away with an 11-0 run to start the second half, with Utti’s score off a steal by Jetta Ideue giving the Gulls a 36-15 lead and capping a 17-0 Seaside run.
“Not quite as sharp as the previous night, but another great all-around game from Utti and Villegas,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “And a strong third quarter helped put the game to a comfortable margin. Slow, but steady progress, as we continue to get kids to figure out how to be consistent and ready to play.”
Utti continues to close in on a quadruple-double, as she finished with 22 points, 10 steals, nine assists and seven rebounds. Seaside finished with 17 steals, but Utti was the only player with multiple steals.
Villegas had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
