Ruth Swenson and Brian Owen

Almost everyone in Seaside knows Ruth Swenson, the ubiquitous owner of the Hillcrest Inn and Hillcrest House, as a volunteer familiar at beach cleanups, ribbon-cuttings, parades and more. Swenson won the coveted Seaside Chamber of Commerce Byron Award for volunteerism for 2018.

Swenson opened the doors of Hillcrest House to members of the chamber on Wednesday, Feb. 12, for the morning breakfast meeting.

Built in 1921, the house preceded the opening of the neighboring inn — by a decade.

Today, the 16-person overnight occupancy, pet-friendly Hillcrest House is a vacation rental and party space, where families come year after year for reunions, weddings and family events.

“It's a fun house with a lot of fun memories for a lot of people,” Swenson said. “We’re pretty proud of our relationship with everyone.”

Hillcrest Inn and Hillcrest House are located at 118 N. Columbia, Seaside; 503-738-6723.
