Linnton man to run for state Senate

John Maxwell

A Linnton man will vie for state Sen. Betsy Johnson’s Senate seat.

John Maxwell has announced he will run as a nonaffiliated candidate for the District 16 position. He said he intends to caucus with Democrats if elected.

The Senate district encompasses Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties and portions of Washington and Multnomah counties. Johnson, D-Scappoose, has represented the district since 2005.

Maxwell said Johnson’s tendency to vote with Republicans on key issues was a major factor in his decision to enter the race. He said he would press for universal health care, gun control, sustainability programs and campaign-finance reform.

“I am running because Senate District 16 needs a senator whose values represent the people in the district,” Maxwell said in a press release.

Maxwell has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in systems science from Portland State University. He is involved with a number of public bodies in Linnton, worked at several national parks through the Student Conservation Association and has managed a number of small business.

The primary election is May 15.
