Jean Anne Kraft

Jean Kraft

March 30, 1917 — Sept. 24, 2014

Jean Kraft passed away Sept. 24 in Seaside, Ore. She was born in Astoria on March 30, 1917. She was the daughter of Gearhart pioneer residents Benjamin and Belle (Huntington) Waterhouse.

Jean attended Clatsop Plains grade school until the fifth grade. The family moved to Knappa, and Jean attended school there until she was a junior in high school. She graduated from Astoria High School at the age of 16.

Immediately after graduating, she left home and on her own worked her way around the country, eventually arriving in New York City. She lived and worked there for approximately 10 years. She met her future husband, Johnny, while there.

They were married in New London, Conn., in 1942. They eventually made their way back to Clatsop County, where they built their own house from directions in a book. They settled in Youngs River and started Johnny and Jean’s Dairy, milking cows and delivering milk successfully for many years. They worked very hard and were very generous people.

Jean’s husband, Johnny, and her sister, Mary Jane Stilwell, preceded her in death. Jean’s sister, Margery Moss, of Gearhart, survives.

Jean had a strong love for animals. She was a very giving and compassionate person. She will be greatly missed.

At her request, there will be no memorial service. Contributions may be made to the Clatsop County Animal Shelter.
