The deadline for submitting applications for scholarships from the Friday Musical Club is Nov. 14.

The Friday Musical Club will award scholarships for music lessons to students in grades eight through 12 in Clatsop and Pacific counties as well community college students through age 21. Students must be recommended by their public school music teacher and/or private music instructor. Applications and recommendation materials are available through the club. Following review of the applications, the recipients will be announced on Dec. 12. Student scholarship recipients are paired with a music instructor; lessons will run from January to May and will culminate in a Scholarship Student Concert in May.

Funds for the music lesson scholarships come from membership dues, donations from club and community members, from the Lund House concerts and from a grant by the Patricia Friedland Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.

Friday Musical Club is affiliated with Astoria High School Scholarships, Inc., and donations to the scholarship fund are eligible for a 501(c)(3) tax deduction.

Friday Musical Club is beginning its108th year. Officers for the 2014-2015 year are: Laurie Drage, president; Diane Amos, vice-president; Ann Lederer and Dolores Villareal, co-secretary; Charlene Larsen, treasurer; Dr. Susan Buehler, chairwoman of the scholarship committee.

The mission of the Friday Musical Club is β€˜β€™to further musical excellence.” Meetings are held monthly at various locations. Members share their love of music through musical performances, poetry, book reviews and other artistic presentations.
