Every two years in January, the Seaside City Council dedicates a weekend to goal-setting. Goals made during the January sessions are set for two- and four-year periods.
In 2021, the city and its consultants, the Coraggio Group, set goals to address homelessness, natural resources, emergency response and resiliency. Guiding principles sought to preserve the desirability of Seaside through inclusivity, decisions in the city’s best interests and resources to support those decisions.
On Jan. 9, representatives from the Coraggio Group returned to a City Council work session to update strategies for the next four years.
“One of the things that we want to be able to do is provide as much context and grounding for each department head to feel really connected to the work and very clear on what’s on all of your minds collectively as a council,” Trever Cartwright, founder of Coraggio Group, said.
The city and Coraggio Group signed a $12,000 agreement in December for meetings with councilors, city staff and department heads prior to the retreats.
On Jan. 27 and Jan. 28, the council will meet with consultants to align two-year and four-year high-level goals, identify measures of success, monitor progress and report on impact.
According to the proposed statement of work, the council will develop specific actions to support each of the goals, followed by a conversation about next steps and implementation.
Within a week of the retreat, Coraggio Group will provide a one-page plan that documents both the conversation and the strategic decisions made.
Mayor Steve Wright reflected on the past two years as the council prepares to drill down on issues at coming sessions.
“Two years ago, we maybe didn’t follow through as well because we got sidetracked with that COVID thing that happened,” he said. “But we still accomplished a number of the things that are on the list.”
Councilors will meet with department heads on Jan. 20, Wright said, who urged the public to share their thoughts prior to the retreat.
