“Dear customers: Thank you for your patronage these last 50 years. We couldn’t have made it without you. We love and appreciate all of you and we’ll miss seeing you every day. Love, Ken and Family.”

So read the farewell note delivered by Ken Smith, along with a vanilla cake with white frosting.

On Saturday morning, customers and friends — for Smith — there are many who are both — offered a salute to Smith and his family for their many years in Seaside. 

Since 1967, Ken Smith has been the owner and proprietor of Ken and Sons Select Market on Avenue U, delivering groceries to the public with his family by his side.

As of Monday, the store will become the Hamilton Market when new owners Natasha Montero and Mike Hamilton take over.

“This cake here probably needs to be eaten,” Smith said.
