• Seaside Civilian Work Force:
Former City Councilor Gary Diebolt lost a 10-year fight with cancer Nov. 14. His last year was the worst, but he continued with his work in town and at home to finish the jobs he had to do. Never one to leave anything undone, he left orders and notes for things should he not be able to finish them.
On cold November mornings, in the dark forests of Clatsop County, a hunter treks for miles in the wet brush to get to his favorite wallow, where the huge six pointers gather. The wallow, a mud bath mixed with urine, is used by bull elk to scent themselves and mark their territories. Suddenly the piercing note of a bull breaks through the underbrush. What the hunter does next determines whether or not he will come away with a trophy and a freezer full of meat.
